Washington D.C. [USA], Dec 18 (ANI): The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has approved, with a 2/3 majority, a resolution introduced by Ukraine asking Russia to cease restriction of international vessels in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
"The result of the vote is as follows: in favour - 66, against - 19, abstention - 72. The draft resolution is adopted," a United Nations official at the meeting announced, according to Sputnik. The document is titled 'Militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine), as well as parts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov'.
The adoption of the resolution comes in the wake of the Kerch Strait incident where three of Ukraine's vessels were impounded by Russia when they entered the Kerch Strait, despite warnings issued by the Russian side. All Ukrainian crewmen on board were also detained.
The US and the EU have put their support behind Kiev on the matter and have called for the Ukrainian crewmen's freedom. (ANI)
